Background. As educational systems around the globe increasingly focus on delivering outcomes and evidence of early childhood education, questions are asked about how increasing the cognitive load on children in preschool settings impacts their development.

Objective. To better understand this problem, a five-year programmatic study was funded by the Australian Research Council with the objective of researching conceptual play as an intervention, studying imagination in play and imagination in science, engineering, and technology.

Design. The study design featured 3,000 teachers, 100 families, and 120 focus infants and toddlers in Australia who were followed for five years.

Results. The study is currently underway. This paper gives an overview and conceptualisation of the research, and the midterm findings. The project expects to generate new knowledge about the concept formation of infants, toddlers, and pre-schoolers under the conditions of a Conceptual PlayWorld in play-based settings and homes.

Conclusion. The projected outcomes are expected to include understanding about how concepts can be intentionally taught in play settings and learned at home for particular cultural age periods. Significant benefits will include increased knowledge of how exposure to these concepts in the formative years affects children’s development.

In early childhood education and care, Nordic social pedagogy approach is challenged by a learning orientation that often results in unproductive ‘either/or’ thinking. Therefore, based on the two approaches and by analysing several dimensions of Froebel’s ideas and prevailing social-historical activity (play) theory, the author deduces four generally accepted play criteria that form the basis for the construction of a dynamic and play-based learning concept that has the three following cornerstones as focal points: (1) learning happens in activities where the child is an active participant and interacts and communicates with other people; (2) meaningful activities pave the way for children’s learning; these are activities where the child’s motive aligns with the goal of the activity; and (3) learning is seen as a productive and creative activity characterised by imagination.

The phenomenon of imaginary companions (ICs) has received little attention in developmental psychology, even though it can be observed in approximately 25% of preschool-aged children. Only a few studies have investigated the effect of ICs on children’s theory of mind and emotion understanding, and the results are partial or inconsistent. This study used comprehensive measures to assess emotional understanding and theory of mind in children aged four to six with ICs (N = 24) and compared their performance to that of children without ICs (N = 24). Results showed that children with ICs, regardless of age and gender, have a better theory of mind and emotion understanding than children without ICs. The greatest impact of ICs was on girls’ emotion understanding. The results are discussed in relation to gender differences.

Play and playfulness are basic features in early childhood education. The elements of play are pleasure, a sense of freedom, and the co-construction of shared meaning through the use of rules or rhythms. Play and learning are closely related in early childhood. But when the focus on the educational benefits of play becomes too strong, the most essential feature of play is lost: children’s pleasure. Young children in group settings often have to adapt to the teachers’ demands related to security, hygiene, and social norms and values. But the playfulness of the teachers helps to overcome differences in power in the caregiver-child relationship and prevents young children from becoming overburdened with strict rules and group discipline. Play and playfulness are a resource of shared pleasure and creativity in learning processes.
